Posh fish 'n' chips outfit chooses Manchester for its fifth venue

A family-run restaurant group specialising in traditional British dishes has just submitted a planning application for a unit at 29 John Dalton Street in the city centre.

George’s Great British Kitchen, a company which describes itself as ‘a good and proper place’, opened its first independent restaurant in Nottingham in 2015, swiftly followed by similar venues in Newcastle, Liverpool and Leeds.

Owners Andy and Nick met at school in Bulwell, Nottingham, partnering up to start a proper fish and chips business. Eventually the concept expanded into serving a wider range of classic British dishes fusing locally sourced ingredients with globally inspired flavours, with the help of development chef Duncan Poyser, whose previous experience includes Styal’s 39 Steps, Obsidian at Manchester’s former Free Trade Hall and Alderley Edge Hotel.

Duncan helped to develop the theme by including hearty dishes such as runny yolk Scotch egg, the ‘cod dog’, proper scampi, chicken in a basket and shepherd’s pie as well as fish and meat cooked on the charcoal grill, rounded off by a number of steamed puddings, tarts and crumbles.

Produce has been mostly sourced from the UK, except wild cod which is caught in the Norwegian Fjords, but their fresh haddock has been caught off Peterhead and potatoes of choice are Maris Piper grown in the farmlands of Shropshire.

As you’d expect, George’s also specialise in that other traditional British classic – gin. Their gin bar is packed with a selection of Britain’s best waiting to be mixed with George’s own fruit syrup concoctions to create a range of splendid cocktails.

If approved the new venue will further enhance an area already bustling with restaurants including Bill's, Grill on the Alley, My Thai, Salvi’s and Katsouris deli.

George’s is expected to open early 2018.
