Shoulder of Mutton pub to become less meaty and more, er ‘meety’

Ten years ago, ne’er an eyelid would have been batted at an all-meat menu or a cheery hog roast on the village green. But the rise in popularity of vegetarianism and veganism over the last few years has brought more diversity in restaurant menus. The word on the street is we’ve swapped beef for beetroot and lamb for leeks.
Perhaps all George & Dragon pubs should be renamed out of respect to slain mythical creatures?
But one Yorkshire pub has taken things a bit further. The Shoulder of Mutton in Heworth Green has decided to do away with its name - which it has held for well over half a century - to make it more appealing to its plant-loving clientele.
Now called the Heworth Inn, landlady Leah Stannard has made the change in order to increase the customer base and refocus the menu on vegetarian and vegan offerings.
According to the York Press, Stannard said that the name was “slightly compromising of the idea” of a pub with a wide range of vegetarian food, but that they were also applying for a wedding license in 2019, and they “…imagined that many brides may not want the invites for their big day to be at a place called the Shoulder of Mutton.”
Is this a positive step towards being inclusive or is this political correctness gone mad? And if this is the kind of forward-thinking approach we should all be taking, then which Leeds venues are in need of an immediate name change before they are swamped by mass outrage?
